Love Your Liver

As a culture, we seem to be increasingly liver-conscious—ever more aware of the importance of a healthy liver. This attention is well deserved. Without question, the liver is one of our most vital organs—perhaps second only to the lungs and the heart. We can live with just one kidney or a single lung, and we can do without the spleen entirely. But we cannot survive without a functioning liver.... Continue Reading >

The liver is one hardworking organ. Not only does it produce bile to support good digestion, it also produces proteins required for blood clotting, stores excess glycogen to keep blood sugar levels steady, and transforms amino acids from our food into energy. (And that’s not all it does—there’s more! But I think you get the point, the liver is busy!) However, one of the most well-known jobs the liver has is to filter out toxins to be eliminated from the body.

The liver doesn’t work alone on this detox job; it depends on the lymphatic system, kidneys, and skin to help filter out these toxins. Because the skin is the largest organ of the body, it is also a very effective way for the body to get rid of toxins. When the liver is not properly removing toxins during the digestive process, it can show up in your skin. You might see this as rashes, pimples, acne, patches of dry skin, and any other inflammatory skin conditions.

So how do you know if your skin problems are related to your liver? Here are a few other signs you might see that indicate the liver isn’t up to par:

  • Bloating after a heavy or fatty meal
  • Nausea after eating
  • Stools that are green or yellow
  • Chronic constipation or loose stools
  • Difficulty digesting heavy foods
  • Digestion is better when taking digestive enzymes before eating

There are several ways to naturally support the liver using items you probably already have in your kitchen—or at least items you can find at any grocery store. Two of my favorites are lemons and beets. Both of these foods promote bile flow, helping to clear out the liver as well as boosting digestion. Here are two delicious ways to incorporate them into your daily diet.

Lemon Digestive Tonic

from The Mindbody Cleanse by Ronly Blau and Adrian Nowland

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup fresh squeezed lemon juice (about 2 large lemons)
  • ¾ cup filtered water
  • Large pinch of sea salt
  • 1 inch fresh ginger root, grated fine

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in a jar with a tight-fitting lid.  Drink 1–3 ounces, 10–15 minutes before each meal. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Beet Liver Cleanser

from The Mindbody Cleanse by Ronly Blau and Adrian Nowland

Ingredients:

  • 2 raw beets, grated
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 1 teaspoon lemon rind
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger root, grated
  • 1 small apple with peel on, grated
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
  • Handful of fresh cilantro, chopped, for garnish (optional)

Directions:

Combine all ingredients and stir well. Enjoy a little at each meal. Ideally, this recipe will be eaten in two days. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

While not all skin conditions are related to a sluggish liver, it is always a good idea to take extra care of this hardworking organ. Add these two simple recipes to your daily routine and enjoy clearer skin, better digestion, and more vibrant health!
