Turmeric is wonderful as a cooking spice. You will find it in many Indian recipes, and you can add it to your own dishes. It can also be taken as a tea by adding ¼ to ½ teaspoon powder to warm water. You can enjoy this tea once or twice daily. We also offer turmeric in tablet form and as a liquid extract.
Determining the amount that works for you is entirely dependent on you and your reason for using turmeric. That said, anywhere from ¼ to 1 teaspoon per day is the suggested daily amount and is generally well tolerated.
A great way to use turmeric for all around support is to cook with it. Many Indian and Ayurvedic recipes include turmeric: kitchari and curry are two examples. Turmeric is an ingredient in our Kitchari Spice Mix, which can be added to various recipes. You may find that you will enjoy less or more turmeric than the ½ teaspoon, and we encourage you to find the amount that works best for you.
You can use turmeric in your cooking or take ¼ to ½ teaspoon twice daily in warm water. To support the lungs and throat when dryness is present, you can make turmeric milk by adding 1 tsp turmeric to 1 cup milk and gently boil for 3 minutes, then cool and drink before bed.1 Turmeric can also be found in Immune Support and I Travel Well, which are great formulas for supporting the immune system.
Taking turmeric internally is a wonderful way to care for your skin and blood. Any of the earlier suggestions—cooking with turmeric, turmeric tea, or using tablets or the liquid extract—will help with this intention. For added support when you may have excess heat, mix turmeric in a tablespoon of aloe vera gel. Tumeric also combines well with manjistha and neem, all of which can be found in Blood Cleanse and Healthy Skin tablets.
To help stimulate healthy digestion, turmeric can be taken first thing in the morning by adding your chosen amount to warm water. This will help stimulate digestion as it supports your liver, which in turn helps your body digest. As an additional bonus you can add fresh ginger and honey, which will help it taste delicious.
Turmeric works particularly well for supporting the joints when swelling, heat, and discomfort are present. Use turmeric on its own, or for added benefit try a traditional combination of mixing trikatu and turmeric together. Trikatu is said to help the effectiveness of turmeric when addressing excess heat in the joints. Add a pinch of trikatu to ½ teaspoon turmeric and take one or two times daily. Turmeric and neem together are a great combination for supporting the pancreas and helping the body digest the kaphic qualities of foods—sweet, heavy, and unctuous. This aids the body in maintaining healthy blood sugar levels already within the normal range. Sweet Ease tablets include turmeric and neem, which promotes healthy blood glucose levels. If you would like to mix these yourself, you can use a one to one ratio (note that neem is quite bitter).
Taking turmeric on its own in warm water will give overall support to the heart. You can also try adding the powder to fresh ginger root tea.
Kapha is damp, heavy, and cool. Since turmeric has the opposite qualities of being dry, light, and heating, it is a great herb for balancing kapha. You can use it by itself (see earlier suggestions), or you can take Healthy Kapha tablets, which contain turmeric and other herbs, for all-around kapha support.

Curcumin is a naturally occurring chemical constituent in turmeric.
The amount of curcumin in our turmeric powder is approximately 3 percent. The concentration can vary from season to season depending on environmental conditions such as sunlight, water, and heat.
It is not necessary to take black pepper with turmeric. The absorption of turmeric only becomes an issue if you are taking an isolated extract of turmeric like curcumin. Much of the research concerning turmeric’s absorbability is specific to extracted curcumin, which on its own has low bioavailability.
Banyan turmeric is made from the whole turmeric root with all the plant’s constituents, including curcumin, in their naturally occurring proportions. In its natural state, turmeric is easily absorbed by the body.
