Maggie Hawk is a Native Oregonian. Since childhood she has had a strong interest in learning about cultures all over the world. In 2009, Maggie graduated from Portland State University with a Bachelors degree in Applied Linguistics. She speaks Spanish and Mandarin in addition to English, can understand a handful of other languages including Brazilian Portuguese, Italian, Chinook Wawa, and Irish Gaelic, and has dabbled in learning even more. Maggie believes that true understanding comes from seeing differences, not just similarities.
How has Ayurveda changed your life?
After living in the countryside of Taiwan in 2010, I was riddled with multiple parasites and bacteria. I tried doctors from the whole spectrum of philosophies and nothing seemed to help my condition. Finally I found Ayurveda. Not only did an Ayurvedic approach to treatment get rid of my disease, to my astonishment, it reversed the seemingly permanent damage that living with parasites had left with me.
Which Banyan products are you currently using and why?
I use so many of our products with frequency! I LOVE our Breast Balm – it feels great and the smell is fabulous. I use the Nasya Oil every night before bed which brings clarity to my mind and in turn helps me fall asleep really fast. I’m into taking our Everyday Greens Tablets right now to help balance my gut. Healthy Vata, Women’s Support, and Vata Digest are my regular go-tos to stay balanced and to help my energy flow down.
When are you most likely to go out of balance and how do you bring yourself back in balance using Ayurveda?
I love to travel but it sends me way out of balance. My system gets freaked and wants to tense up. Making sure to have lots of hot teas, time to meditate, and doing stretches before bed help me to feel more grounded when I’m out of my normal routine. Not to mention, I would be very sad if I didn’t have Triphala Tablets and I Travel Well Liquid Extract along with me on a trip!
Favorite place in the world?
Any place can be my favorite in the moment.
Sewing, drawing and writing letters, listening to music, enjoying Nature.
Who inspires you?
Anyone who has to courage and determination to follow their heart is an inspiration to me. In movies when the character achieves their big dream- I cry. I always do!
Favorite sattvic meal/recipe?
“Gingey-Tume Tea”! Grate fresh Ginger root and fresh Turmeric root and steep in hot water. After 5 minutes, strain out the herbs. Add local honey and a dash of milk. Sometimes I even add a bit of Ghee. I drink this all winter long!
