Mahanarayan Oil Frequently Asked Questions
What is Mahanarayan Oil used for?
Mahanarayan Oil is a traditional Ayurvedic herbal oil used to soothe and rejuvenate the muscles and joints. This deeply penetrating, warming oil provides comfort for joints, muscle stiffness, and muscle fatigue. It is commonly used to soothe and support muscle recovery after physical activity, and to ease discomfort. The oil also traditionally supports nerve health.
Banyan's Mahanarayan Oil is hand crafted and is based on a beloved Ayurvedic recipe featuring over 30 certified organic herbs infused into a sesame oil base. This rich blend includes key ingredients like ashwagandha for strength and vitality, shatavari for tissue nourishment, and camphor essential oil for its cooling-then-warming sensation.
Whether you are an athlete seeking post-workout recovery or you are simply looking for a comforting daily massage oil for whole body self-care, Mahanarayan Oil offers versatile support for an active lifestyle.
How is Banyan's Mahanarayan Oil different from other brands?
The Ayurvedic market offers several Mahanarayan Oil options, from classical thailams to budget-friendly versions. Classical thailams often prioritize maximum potency and traditional preparation, while value brands focus on accessibility and affordability. Banyan Botanicals occupies a unique position by combining authentic traditional methods with certified organic ingredients, rigorous third-party testing, and sustainable sourcing practices that meet modern wellness standards.
Banyan's Mahanarayan Oil is produced in-house in small batches using traditional Ayurvedic methods, ensuring quality control from start to finish. Made with 99% certified organic herbs, this formula reflects Banyan's commitment to ethical sourcing and environmental responsibility. The result is a clean, effective herbal oil with balanced warming qualities that works well for daily abhyanga practice or targeted application. For those who want classical Ayurvedic benefits with organic purity and transparency, Banyan offers the best of both worlds.
How do I apply Mahanarayan Oil for the best results?
For optimal results, warm Mahanarayan Oil slightly before application, as this supports nourishment and helps the herbs penetrate more deeply into the tissues. Apply to targeted areas or use it as a comforting daily massage oil for the whole body. Gently massage with firm pressure, using long strokes on the limbs and circular strokes on the joints. Work from your hands and feet toward your heart, allowing the oil to absorb for 10–20 minutes before showering.
For targeted support for the joints or muscles, massage into the desired area daily or as needed. After applying Mahanarayan Oil, taking a warm shower can help open the pores for deeper penetration and enhance the warming, soothing effects. This self-massage practice, known as abhyanga in Ayurvedic tradition, transforms simple oil application into a nourishing self-care routine that supports both physical comfort and overall well-being.
How often should I use Mahanarayan Oil?
The recommended frequency for using Mahanarayan Oil depends on your wellness goals and the nature of what you are addressing. For general wellness, maintaining flexibility, and supporting healthy aging, incorporating Mahanarayan Oil into your self-care routine 2–3 times per week provides benefits.
Athletes and physically active individuals often use Mahanarayan Oil after workouts to soothe muscle fatigue, support a healthy inflammatory response, and accelerate muscle recovery. Seniors or those with elevated vata in the joints may benefit from regular massage to provide comfort and improve flexibility and mobility. Consistency matters more than intensity. Even brief, regular sessions with this herbal oil can produce cumulative benefits for the joints and muscles, especially when combined with warmth and gentle movement.
Is Mahanarayan Oil safe for sensitive skin, and are there any precautions?
Mahanarayan Oil is formulated for external use only and should never be consumed internally. Before using it on larger areas, perform a patch test on a small section of skin to check for any sensitivity or irritation. Do not apply Mahanarayan Oil to broken, wounded, or irritated skin. While the organic sesame oil base and herbal ingredients are generally well-tolerated, individuals with known allergies to any listed ingredients should review the full ingredient list carefully before use.
Banyan's Mahanarayan Oil contains Camphor essential oil, which provides a cooling-then-warming sensation. Those with very sensitive skin may wish to dilute with additional plain sesame oil or use smaller amounts initially. As with all oils, exercise caution on slippery surfaces. Store linens carefully, as they may be combustible when exposed to heat. Consult your dryer manufacturer's guidelines for drying linens that have been in contact with oils. See our Ayurvedic self-massage guide for more, including when it is not recommended to perform abhyanga as well as cleaning and plumbing tips.
Why is Mahanarayan Oil good during cold weather or for a vata imbalance?
In Ayurveda, Mahanarayan Oil is most commonly used to address vata dosha imbalances. Cold weather naturally aggravates vata, and in the physiology this can lead to increased popping of the joints, muscle stiffness, and general discomfort during autumn and winter months. The warming, deeply penetrating qualities of Mahanarayan Oil help counteract these vata tendencies by bringing warmth and nourishment back to the tissues.
While it is especially beneficial for those with elevated vata dosha, Banyan's Mahanarayan Oil is balancing for all doshas. The rich blend of warming herbs, infused in nourishing sesame oil, helps calm the nervous system, relax tense muscles, and restore comfort throughout the body. Incorporating this herbal oil into your self-massage routine during vata season provides both preventive care and active relief, supporting your body's natural ability to stay flexible and comfortable year-round.

Wonderful oil for massage and relaxation
This product is a game changer! I use it after working out and exercise and it works so well for recovery and sore muscles. It helped my knee, my shoulder, like a miracle oil - I highly recommend. I often get started on an exercise routine and then get injured but using this has helped me keep my routine consistent without setbacks. I absolutely love the smell too.
I can't understand why people say this smells bad. To me it smell wonderful! A complex aroma of multiple herbs. But the real benefit is the warm soothing it brings to my tired, vata vitiated knees. This is so much better than anything you can buy in a drugstore. When my knees act-up I rub the oil in for about 5 minutes for each knee, wrap them and then apply light heat overnight and in the morning they are good to go. A wonderful product!
Thank you so much for your kind review, Peter! We're so glad to hear that the Mahanarayan oil is working for you and that you do not mind its unique smell. Great idea too about applying heat for those vata knees. All of us here at Banyan wish you continued health and comfort!
My acupuncturist recommended this product for the cold winter stiffness I experience in my ankle, knee and hip joints. It has been quite effective. Thank you!
It really works!!
