Guggulu
Guggulu resin (Commiphora mukul) is prized in Ayurveda for its deeply penetrating action and unique ability to scrape away naturally accumulating toxins from the body channels.
Guggulu's powerful detoxifying and rejuvenating qualities can enhance the benefits of other herbs and as such, it is often used in combination to create traditional Ayurvedic formulas.
Because guggulu is a unique and incredibly potent substance, we generally recommend using this herb under the guidance of an Ayurvedic practitioner.
What Is Guggulu?
Guggulu is the common name for the flowering mukul myrrh tree. Also known as the Indian bdellium-tree, it is a small, thorny tree in the Burseraceae family that is commonly found in arid climates of India. It may also be found under the names guggul, gugal, or gugul.
Guggulu also refers to the resinous substance formed from the sap of the guggul tree. Renowned for its cleansing and rejuvenating properties, this myrrh resin is highly prized in Ayurvedic medicine and used to enhance health in several areas of the body.
Health Benefits of Guggulu
From an Ayurvedic perspective, guggulu helps to balance all three doshas—vata, pitta, and kapha. This can vary depending on how it is formulated and combined with other herbs.
Guggulu aids several systems and tissues in the body, but it is most commonly known for assisting the body's cleansing mechanisms, supporting digestion, bolstering the lungs and respiratory system, promoting healthy weight management, and supporting the joints and mobility.
Banyan's Guggulu Supplements
Because guggulu works so successfully in combination with other herbs, it is rarely taken by itself. In fact, an entire category of traditional Ayurvedic herbal formulas, known as guggulus, has been built around the use of this potent resin.
If you are seeking the single herb, Banyan Botanicals carries guggulu in a powdered form. We also offer several traditional guggulu formulations, including Triphala Guggulu, Yogaraj Guggulu, and Kanchanar Guggulu, both as powders and tablets.
Sustainability of Banyan's Guggulu
Due to severe over-harvesting in recent decades, wild populations of the guggulu tree have become endangered. For this reason, where and how guggul is harvested very directly impacts long-term sustainability.
At Banyan, we take sustainability very seriously and therefore have gone through great lengths to develop relationships with small, private farms where sustainable farming of guggulu can be ensured. By supporting these small, sustainable farmers, we hope to support the regeneration of guggulu and protect its well-being well into the future.
