How To Use

Oil pulling, or kavala as it is traditionally known in Ayurveda, can be practiced in a few simple steps:

  • Place 2–3 tsp. oil in your mouth.
  • Swish vigorously for 2–20 minutes. Try oil pulling while showering, getting dressed, or simply relaxing.
  • Spit out the oil (do not swallow) and rinse well. To protect your pipes, spit into a lined trash can or outside, not down the drain.

Tips for Oil Pulling:

  • For best results, we recommend practicing oil pulling in the morning after brushing and flossing as a part of your normal oral hygiene routine, but you’re welcome to find a time that works for you.
  • If you are new to oil pulling, 20 minutes may seem like a lot—try starting with 2–5 minutes a day and gradually increasing your time. The key is consistency and practicing oil pulling daily to support dental hygiene.

Consider adding an oil pump to your bottle for a spill-free experience. Pumps are available for 8 and 24 oz. bottles.

Keep out of the reach of children. If more than one dose is accidentally swallowed, seek professional advice immediately.

Warning: All oils make surfaces slippery and can be combustible. Use caution when drying or storing linens exposed to oils as they are potentially combustible when exposed to heat. Consult your dryer manufacturer's guidelines for drying linens that have been in contact with oils.

ENHANCE YOUR OIL PULLING EXPERIENCE

How do I practice oil pulling? Should I do oil pulling before or after brushing?

Use 2–3 teaspoons, swish gently for several minutes (building up to 20), then spit out the oil. It’s recommended to spit out the oil in the trash or outside, not down the drain. Never swallow the oil.

Oil pulling is typically recommended after brushing, on an empty stomach, in the morning, but we recommend finding a time that works best for your oral care routine. For more guidance, see our guide, Oil Pulling 101.

Is oil pulling actually good for your teeth?

Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice—known as kavala—used for thousands of years to support oral health and hygiene. It works by the oil binding to unwanted debris in the mouth. While more research is still needed, several studies suggest that oil pulling may help reduce daily build-up, support gum health, and freshen breath.

Banyan’s Daily Swish enhances traditional oil pulling with Ayurvedic herbs like triphala, long used in Ayurveda to promote oral cleanliness and overall mouth health.

What happens if you do oil pulling every day?

Daily oil pulling can be a helpful addition to your oral hygiene routine. When practiced consistently, alongside brushing, flossing, and regular dental care, it can help maintain a healthy oral microbiome, support gum health, and reduce debris in the mouth. It’s with regular practice that you can really enjoy the full benefits of oil pulling.

If you’re new to oil pulling, start with 2–5 minutes and gradually increase the time, working up to 15–20 minutes if comfortable.

Why do some dentists not recommend oil pulling?

The American Dental Association acknowledges oil pulling’s long traditional history but notes that it should complement, not replace, standard oral care practices like brushing and flossing.

Most dentists recommend oil pulling as a supportive practice rather than a primary method of oral hygiene. For personalized guidance, it’s best to consult your dental provider.

What are the disadvantages of oil pulling?

Oil pulling is generally well tolerated, but a few considerations include:

  1. Swallowing the oil: may cause an upset stomach. It is not recommended to swallow the oil.
  2. Jaw fatigue: can occur if swishing too vigorously or for too long; start slow and build gradually.
  3. Allergies: those sensitive to coconut oil or sesame oil should avoid Daily Swish, which contains both.

Otherwise, oil pulling is a gentle and supportive practice for most people.

Who is Daily Swish intended for?

Daily Swish is formulated for anyone interested in incorporating Ayurvedic oil pulling into their daily routine. Its pleasant taste and gentle herbal blend make it ideal for both beginners and long-time practitioners, as well as those seeking certified organic ingredients and traditional Ayurvedic formulations.

What other oils can I use for oil pulling?

In addition to Mint Daily Swish, Banyan also offers Cinnamon Daily Swish, featuring the same base of sesame oil, coconut oil, triphala, guduchi, and fennel, with warming cinnamon and clove essential oils.

If you prefer a single traditional oil, plain sesame oil or coconut oil are both classic Ayurvedic choices for oil pulling.

What is the difference between kavala and gandusha?

In traditional Ayurvedic medicine, kavala refers to the practice now commonly known as oil pulling—gently swishing a comfortable amount of oil (traditionally sesame or coconut) around the mouth, through the teeth, and along the gums.

Gandusha involves filling the mouth completely with oil and simply holding it without swishing.

Both traditional methods are used to support oral hygiene, strengthen the muscles of the oral cavity, and promote overall oral well-being.

What's the difference between mouthwash and Daily Swish?

Conventional mouthwash is designed to freshen breath quickly, often using alcohol or strong antiseptics to kill bacteria that cause bad breath. While effective in the short term, these formulas can be quite harsh, sometimes disrupting the natural balance of the oral microbiome and leaving the mouth feeling dry or overly stripped.

Daily Swish offers a more holistic approach. This oil-based practice gently cleanses while supporting the natural ecology of the mouth. Infused with nourishing herbs and oils, it supports fresh breath and leaves the tissues feeling clean, hydrated, and refreshed—promoting long-term oral health.

An oil pulling product praised for oral health benefits. Customers said it has a "subtle mint taste," leaves mouths "clean and fresh," and improves gum health. Many noted whiter teeth and reduced plaque. Some concerns about packaging dribbling, small bottle size for price, and oily texture being difficult to adjust to initially.

  • My teeth are so much whiter! Just 3 uses :) I'm hooked.
  • My gums are healthier and stronger, my teeth are shinier, I do recommend this product.
  • Leaves my mouth feeling refreshed and clean!

The product is great, but the packaging could use some work. There should be some sort of tapered , or geometrically appropriate spout so that it doesn't dribble down the side of the bottle every time you use it. It makes a mess, and it wastes product, and for the cost, every drop counts. . This, is the only reason I didn't rate it 5-stars.

The product is great, but the packaging could use some work. There should be some sort of tapered easy-pour spout so that it doesn't dribble down the side of the bottle every time you use it. It makes dispensing a mess, and wastes product. This is the only reason I didn't give it 5-stars. Thank you.

I like the mint. It makes my mouth feel clean.

This product makes me gag. I tired using it several times with a few days in between but it is an awful taste and the fact that it is oil makes it very unsatisfactory. I am sorry I bought this as it was very expensive and now I am tossing it. it doesnt even leave my mouth feeling refreshed. Plus you cant spit it down the drain but instead into a plastic bag to toss in the trash. Very disappointed at this product.

Too small of container for price, doesn’t last long. But truly wonderful product.

I love the ingredients but it certainly doesn't last 30 days, even with the new pump. Maybe my mouth is just to big 😆

Wow...so thrilled after just 3 uses

I tried oil pulling with just coconut oil once and it grossed me out. But I knew that I needed to give this product a try because of the health benefits of oil pulling. I'm so pleased with how clean my mouth feels after (and even during) use of the Daily Swish! As an added wonderful surprise, my teeth are so much whiter! Just 3 uses :) I'm hooked. Thank you for this great product!

Love it!

I never done oil pulling before, but this stuff was so pleasant I managed to go a whole 20 minutes with it my first try. My mouth is so clean; it's a great addition to the tongue cleaning 1st thing in the morning. And the bonus is my teeth are whiter than ever. Flossing is easier, too.

solved the solid coconut oil problem

I love oil pulling but having to warm coconut oil that's solidified keeps me less than consistent. This product is always at the ready and the added herbs and minty taste make my mouth feel extra sparkly clean. LOVE this.

Feels so clean and refreshed

I love Daily Swish! My mouth feels so clean after I use it. I will often mix a drop in with baking soda and use it as toothpaste. I've also found that if I eat something like garlic or onions, 20min of Daily Swish make me feel clean and fresh as well. Daily is ideal, my dentist doesn't have so much work to do and I swear my teeth are whiter. Love it.

Use it daily. It is a gentle and healing mouthwash with an almost unremarkable peppermint tast. Calming and soothing for gums and teeth.

Best mouthwash ever

Before the daily swish I used coconut oil but I couldn't deal with the taste so I gave up many months ago, and completely forgot about it, this year I want to incorporate more Ayurveda habits into my lifestyle so when i order this I wasn't sure I was going to even like, turns out I loved it! It tastes amazing and does an amazing job.

So happy I ordered it.

Separation/contamination

I first purchased the smallest bottle to try.
I liked the product, so I purchased a large bottle to refill the small bottle. By the time I needed to refill the small bottle more than 90 days had past. The large bottle (that was never opened) has a lot of particles/sediment on the bottom. The particles didn't mix in when shaken. They just floated around in the bottle. When I called customer service they suggested it was the coconut oil solidifying due to coldness. It's not that cold anymore and the particles are still present. I got no satisfaction from my call. I couldn't return the product, although unopened, because more than 90 days have past from purchase. Now I have a $40 unopened bottle of this stuff that I'm not going to use with all of these particles floating around in it.
The small bottle never had anything floating around in it, even when it was cold.
I have a feeling it was old product. There is no way of knowing. There are no expiration dates on the bottles. The packing of the order was also done poorly and the bottle was crushed. Because I was only using it to refill the smaller bottle I never notified them of the damage to the bottle.
I'm EXTREMELY unhappy with this purchase!

Hi Lisa, thank you for your feedback. We are so very sorry to hear of your unsatisfactory experience and the lack of resolution on our part. Although it is normal for there to be a small amount of natural sediment from the herbs that get cooked into our massage oils, we want you to be absolutely satisfied with your purchase. We will be contacting you by email to work out a refund or replacement, so keep an eye on our inbox!
