How To Use
How To Use
Oil pulling, or kavala as it is traditionally known in Ayurveda, can be practiced in a few simple steps:
- Place 2–3 tsp. oil in your mouth.
- Swish vigorously for 2–20 minutes. Try oil pulling while showering, getting dressed, or simply relaxing.
- Spit out the oil (do not swallow) and rinse well. To protect your pipes, spit into a lined trash can or outside, not down the drain.
Tips for Oil Pulling:
- For best results, we recommend practicing oil pulling in the morning after brushing and flossing as a part of your normal oral hygiene routine, but you’re welcome to find a time that works for you.
- If you are new to oil pulling, 20 minutes may seem like a lot—try starting with 2–5 minutes a day and gradually increasing your time. The key is consistency and practicing oil pulling daily to support dental hygiene.
Consider adding an oil pump to your bottle for a spill-free experience. Pumps are available for 8 and 24 oz. bottles.
Keep out of the reach of children. If more than one dose is accidentally swallowed, seek professional advice immediately.
Warning: All oils make surfaces slippery and can be combustible. Use caution when drying or storing linens exposed to oils as they are potentially combustible when exposed to heat. Consult your dryer manufacturer's guidelines for drying linens that have been in contact with oils.

THE SCIENCE OF OIL PULLING
How does oil pulling work? Oil shares a natural affinity with the lipid-based cell membranes on the exterior of a cell—including many of the microorganisms that inhabit the mouth, such as plaque and odor-causing buildup. When these microbes come in contact with oil during oil pulling, they naturally adhere to it, helping them detach from the teeth and gums and restore a healthy oral microbiome.

Mint Daily Swish™ Frequently Asked Questions
Is oil pulling actually good for your teeth?
Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice—known as kavala—used for thousands of years to support oral health and hygiene. It works by the oil binding to unwanted debris in the mouth. While more research is still needed, several studies suggest that oil pulling may help reduce daily build-up, support gum health, and freshen breath.
Banyan’s Daily Swish enhances traditional oil pulling with Ayurvedic herbs like triphala, long used in Ayurveda to promote oral cleanliness and overall mouth health.
What happens if you do oil pulling every day?
Daily oil pulling can be a helpful addition to your oral hygiene routine. When practiced consistently, alongside brushing, flossing, and regular dental care, it can help maintain a healthy oral microbiome, support gum health, and reduce debris in the mouth. It’s with regular practice that you can really enjoy the full benefits of oil pulling.
If you’re new to oil pulling, start with 2–5 minutes and gradually increase the time, working up to 15–20 minutes if comfortable.
Why do some dentists not recommend oil pulling?
The American Dental Association acknowledges oil pulling’s long traditional history but notes that it should complement, not replace, standard oral care practices like brushing and flossing.
Most dentists recommend oil pulling as a supportive practice rather than a primary method of oral hygiene. For personalized guidance, it’s best to consult your dental provider.
What are the disadvantages of oil pulling?
Oil pulling is generally well tolerated, but a few considerations include:
- Swallowing the oil: may cause an upset stomach. It is not recommended to swallow the oil.
- Jaw fatigue: can occur if swishing too vigorously or for too long; start slow and build gradually.
- Allergies: those sensitive to coconut oil or sesame oil should avoid Daily Swish, which contains both.
Otherwise, oil pulling is a gentle and supportive practice for most people.
Who is Daily Swish intended for?
Daily Swish is formulated for anyone interested in incorporating Ayurvedic oil pulling into their daily routine. Its pleasant taste and gentle herbal blend make it ideal for both beginners and long-time practitioners, as well as those seeking certified organic ingredients and traditional Ayurvedic formulations.
What other oils can I use for oil pulling?
In addition to Mint Daily Swish, Banyan also offers Cinnamon Daily Swish, featuring the same base of sesame oil, coconut oil, triphala, guduchi, and fennel, with warming cinnamon and clove essential oils.
If you prefer a single traditional oil, plain sesame oil or coconut oil are both classic Ayurvedic choices for oil pulling.
What is the difference between kavala and gandusha?
In traditional Ayurvedic medicine, kavala refers to the practice now commonly known as oil pulling—gently swishing a comfortable amount of oil (traditionally sesame or coconut) around the mouth, through the teeth, and along the gums.
Gandusha involves filling the mouth completely with oil and simply holding it without swishing.
Both traditional methods are used to support oral hygiene, strengthen the muscles of the oral cavity, and promote overall oral well-being.
Should I do oil pulling before or after brushing?
Oil pulling is typically recommended after brushing, on an empty stomach, in the morning, but we recommend finding a time that works best for your oral care routine. For more guidance, see our guide, Oil Pulling 101.
How do I practice oil pulling?
Use 2–3 teaspoons, swish gently for several minutes (building up to 20), then spit out the oil. It’s recommended to spit out the oil in the trash or outside, not down the drain. Never swallow the oil.

Too small of container for price, doesn’t last long. But truly wonderful product.
I tried oil pulling with just coconut oil once and it grossed me out. But I knew that I needed to give this product a try because of the health benefits of oil pulling. I'm so pleased with how clean my mouth feels after (and even during) use of the Daily Swish! As an added wonderful surprise, my teeth are so much whiter! Just 3 uses :) I'm hooked. Thank you for this great product!
Great proactive product
My husband love love loves the Daily Swish. He used most of it! He had been oiling with sesame/sunflower for years, but the addition of the mint, etc makes a huge difference.
I never done oil pulling before, but this stuff was so pleasant I managed to go a whole 20 minutes with it my first try. My mouth is so clean; it's a great addition to the tongue cleaning 1st thing in the morning. And the bonus is my teeth are whiter than ever. Flossing is easier, too.
