- Work your way from your hands and feet toward your heart. Use long strokes on the limbs and circular strokes on the joints.
- Let absorb for 10–20 minutes, then shower to rinse. Careful not to slip!
If preferred, you may practice self-massage after you shower, but be mindful as oil residue can stain clothing and sheets.

COOLING & SOOTHING
Generally considered tridoshic, Sunflower Oil is especially balancing for pitta because of its subtly cooling nature. It is also good for vata, and is one of the few oils suitable for naturally-oily kapha dosha due to its light texture. Whatever your self-care needs—your skin will thank you!

Sunflower Oil Frequently Asked Questions
Which should I choose, Sunflower Oil or Sesame Oil?
Both are excellent carrier oils—the best choice depends on your preferences, the season, and your Ayurvedic constitution.
Sunflower Oil has a lighter feel and is a little more cooling. Considered tridoshic, or balancing for all three doshas, it can also be a particularly good choice for pitta and for use during the warmer months of the year. It's also a great choice for everyday use.
Sesame Oil is richer and is more warming and grounding, making it a classic choice for balancing vata and kapha, and during cooler weather.
Why choose sunflower oil for abhyanga (Ayurvedic self-massage)?
Sunflower oil has a light texture that glides smoothly over the skin without feeling overly heavy. In Ayurveda, it is traditionally considered nourishing, subtly cooling, and balancing for all three doshas (tridoshic), making it an excellent choice for daily self-massage, especially during warmer weather or for those seeking a lighter massage oil.
Can I use sunflower oil on my face?
Yes, Sunflower Oil can be an excellent choice for the face. Many people enjoy using Sunflower Oil as a lightweight facial oil, especially if they prefer a less rich alternative to heavier oils. Because everyone's skin is unique, and the skin on the face is more delicate, we recommend patch testing before applying it more broadly, particularly if you have sensitive skin. If irritation occurs, discontinue use.
Can I use Sunflower Oil for oil pulling?
Yes. While sesame or coconut oils are more commonly used for oil pulling, this Sunflower Oil makes a great option as well.
For some quick steps to oil pulling: after you have brushed, swish the oil vigorously around your mouth for several minutes before spitting it out into a lined trash can (do not swallow the oil, and do not spit it down the sink as the oil is hard on plumbing), and then rinse out your mouth with water. Oil pulling is a traditional Ayurvedic practice that complements your oral hygiene practices.
What makes Banyan's Organic Sunflower Oil different?
Quality begins with the source. Banyan's Organic Sunflower Oil is sustainably sourced and fairly traded. Made from certified organic sunflower seeds, it is expeller pressed and has been refined using a natural, chemical-free process, which gives it a lighter texture and scent.
It is also incredibly versatile and can be used for massage, body care, creating your own herbal oil infusions, and other traditional Ayurvedic wellness practices.
Why does Banyan offer sunflower oil when seed oils are controversial?
While there is confusion and controversy about using seed oils, scientific studies consistently show that quality seed oils are considered healthy choices. Furthermore, most discussions about seed oils focus on refined cooking oils used in processed foods. Banyan's Organic Sunflower Oil is intended for traditional Ayurvedic self-care practices such as abhyanga and oil pulling. It is organic, hexane-free, and expeller pressed for external wellness practices.
In addition to centuries of use in Ayurveda as a beneficial oil, research on topical sunflower oil supports its ability to help maintain the skin's natural moisture barrier, while studies on oil pulling suggest it may offer oral hygiene benefits when used alongside regular brushing and flossing.

I love Banyan products! The oils are wonderful, the soaps are delightful and all the herbal products I've purchased have been of great quality. Thank you!
I am very pleased with the product.
Thanks for taking the time to review, Pushpa! We're glad to hear it's working for you!
The sunflower oil I purchased was great to use, with a very luxurious feel. It was my first time performing abhyanga, but this seemed to be a wonderful product for it.
I have been using this sunflower oil for my Abhyanga self massage and it is wonderful!
This is my favorite body oil to date! No scent that I can discern, REALLY moisturizing, lightly energizing, well absorbed, and not too heavy. In the 128 oz size, a great value. Will be my new go-to!

I’ve used Banyan Botanicals Sunflower Oil as my moisturizer skin oil for face, neck, decolletage and ankles, and it just does a superb job! This is my 3rd year using this product and I just bought another 32 oz. bottle.

I love this sunflower oil. It is light with not a lot of scent to it. I use it for my oil pulling as well as after a shower...with a few essential oils mixed in. Definitely on my reorder list!
I love the quality and how it feels on my skin. I've been using it for summer, mixed with essential oils for a daily morning abhyanga.
Everything I expected, thank you:)

I used the sunflower oil in a Spring transition recipe. It was the primary carrier oil for four essential oils. I love the feel of the oil. It's very light on the skin. I gave the Spring blend as gifts to 3 people and they all reported how much they loved it as well. I would buy it again.
I find it to be the best. Unscented, doesn’t stain your sheets, allergy free for most people. I love the texture and glide. You don’t need much. Lauren T
I love Sunflower Oil for my massage Practice. I like using it as a base mixed with the infused oils like Mahanarayan or Vata Massage Oil. Looking forward to trying more combinations like that.
Great multi-use product

I've been using the sun flowers and the sesame oil for the past 2 years both are great for massage therapy. The sun flower oil is odorless and mixes great with my essential oils.
I was looking for Sunflower Oil in all the wrong places - grocery store shelves. When I realized I should order from Banyan, as I do for all my other ayurvedic oils, I was happily rewarded. The oil is pure goodness and blends beautifully with my Banyan Sesame and Coconut oils for a nice tridoshic summer abhyanga oil. Would highly recommend it!
I have been oiling my body with sunflower oil daily for over 2 years. I am now adding a bit of bhringaraj oil to it to help balance pitta. I love the oils and my body is happy and grateful for the soothing attention. It not only has lubricated my skin, but my joints and circulation have improved. Thank you for your wonderful pure products.
Perfect for sensitive Pitta dosha, I use this daily in my professional massage practice.

Hi Im Jeff and my wife is Jodi. We still put in 12 to 14 hour days, 6 days a week, doing hard labor working contracting work together with the aid of Vata/Pitta Massage oils. No supplements come close to equaling the positive effects of rubbing each other down twice a week with massage oils.
Fantastic products and service and price.
Hi Jeanne! We really appreciate your feedback and review! We’re thrilled that you’re pleased with the quality and value of our products and service. We look forward to serving you in the future!
i use it for garglig and like it a lot
Excellent carrier oil and massage oil
I really like the sunflower oil. It's not too heavy and mixes great with my essential oils as a carrier oil. I also like it add it to my nightly moisturizing routine and my skin feels great. I would recommend this product.
Love love love this oil. Though I suspect I am PKV, I have been told by 2 practitioners that I am tridoshic. What I found with several of the herbal oils is that they seemed to aggravate pitta a wee bit. THIS, though, is PERFECT! It is oily enough for my kapha looking, but pitta feeling skin. It is not at all heavy, however. It is not at all warming. It has no discernible scent and would do beautifully with a bit of essential oil, but I won't do anything to it at all. Perfect!
Is this high oleic or high linoleic Sunflower oil? And what is the shelf life?
Thank you for your question! Our Sunflower Oil is expeller-pressed and refined, using a natural process. While the refinement process removes gums, non-fatty materials, water soluble pigments and acidic pigments, the end result is an oil which is lighter in body, color and scent. Due to some of the elements being removed from the oil (the gums, non-fatty materials, etc.), some of the nutritional properties are removed as well. As our oils are intended for external use and in alignment with Ayurvedic tradition, we don't standardize our oils or herbal products.
All oils will eventually expire. When stored properly, we suggest using our Sunflower Oil within two years of purchase. For best results, we recommend storing our oils in a cool, dry and dark cupboard or pantry. Keep out of direct sunlight and heat.
what is the origin country of this and your other base oils?
Although it can vary from batch to batch, we work to source primarily from North America. We do at times have international sources as well. The oils are always high quality and certified organic..
Is the sunflower oil refined or unrefined?
The Sunflower oil is refined, certified organic.
Can this base oil be used for a Shirodhara treatment and/or unrefined sesame oil be better?
We suggest using an herbal oil specifically formulated to support shirodhara treatments. Here is a link to our Shirodhara Oil: http://www.banyanbotanicals.com/shop/category/herbal-massage-oils/shirodhara-oil
