Nasya Oil Frequently Asked Questions
What is Nasya oil used for?
Nasya Oil is an Ayurvedic herbal nasal oil traditionally used to moisturize and lubricate nasal passages, support clear breathing, and nourish tissues of the head and sinuses. It is also commonly used as part of a daily routine to promote a calm, clear mind.
In Ayurveda, nasya is considered essential for supporting the proper flow of prana, your vital life force, and is a wonderful way to support your overall well-being.
How does Nasya Oil work?
In Ayurveda, the nose is considered the doorway to the brain, mind, and consciousness. Using the nasal passageway as a direct route allows the base oils, herbs, and essential oils to assimilate more efficiently than other methods.
When you use Nasya Oil, the herbal oil lubricates the nasal passages, nourishes the tissues of the head and sinuses, and supports the proper flow of prana, your vital life force, through the breath. This Ayurvedic practice helps cleanse, protect, and rejuvenate the sensory organs.
How do you use Nasya Oil? Do you need to warm it first?
When lying down: Tilt your head back slightly and place 3–5 drops into each nostril, then inhale gently. Keep your head back for a moment to allow the oil to travel through the nasal passages.
When sitting up: Place a drop of nasya oil on the little finger and gently insert it into the nostril. Gently massage the inner walls of the nasal passage. Alternate left and right nostrils until each nostril has received a total of three applications of oil. After applying Nasya Oil, sniff deeply and rest for a moment to let the oil penetrate.
Warming is not required. Nasya Oil can be used at room temperature, though some people prefer to gently warm the bottle for added comfort. If you choose to warm your bottle, be careful not to get water in the bottle.
When should I practice Nasya Oil?
For most, Nasya Oil is beneficial when used regularly as a part of a daily routine, 1–2 times daily. Administering nasya is often practiced in the morning. It can also be used in the afternoon or evening. We recommend finding a time that works best for your routine.
When should I not use Nasya Oil?
It is not recommended to use Nasya Oil during pregnancy or menstruation, while you have a fever or acute illness, or if you have a sinus infection, cold, or the flu, as the nasal passages need to be clear for safe application.
If you have chronic sinus issues or are unsure whether the practice of nasya is appropriate for you, we encourage you to consult an Ayurvedic practitioner who can provide personalized guidance based on your unique constitution and current state of health.
What are the side effects of Nasya Oil?
Nasya oil is generally well-tolerated when used as directed. Some people may experience mild sensations, such as tingling, a slight burn, or watery eyes, when first using Nasya Oil. These sensations typically subside quickly. If the oil reaches the back of your throat, simply spit it out and rinse with warm water.
To minimize any discomfort, beginners can start with just 1–2 drops per nostril and gradually increase to the recommended 3–5 drops. If you experience persistent irritation or have concerns, discontinue use and consult your health practitioner.
How is Nasya Oil different from Super Nasya Oil?
While both provide lubrication to the nasal passages and can be used regularly, there are some differences between the two blends:
- Nasya Oil, Banyan's signature blend, has been created with the intention of supporting the mind, nervous system, respiratory health, and the channel of prana.
- Super Nasya Oil has an especially awakening and refreshing quality, making it ideal for times of cleansing. The scent profile is a little different from Banyan's Nasya Oil, thanks to the the combination of sandalwood and eucalyptus essential oils.
Many keep both on hand to address different needs.
What makes Banyan's Nasya Oil different from other nasya oils?
Banyan's commitment to quality and sourcing means every ingredient is selected with intention. Nasya Oil is certified organic, non-GMO, cruelty free, and free of phthalates and parabens. Created using a combination of traditional Ayurvedic practices and modern quality standards, Nasya Oil is a trusted choice for both experienced practitioners and those new to the practice of nasya.
