Nasya Oil Frequently Asked Questions
What is Nasya oil used for?
Nasya Oil is an Ayurvedic herbal nasal oil traditionally used to moisturize and lubricate nasal passages, support clear breathing, and nourish tissues of the head and sinuses. It is also commonly used as part of a daily routine to promote a calm, clear mind.
In Ayurveda, nasya is considered essential for supporting the proper flow of prana, your vital life force, and is a wonderful way to support your overall well-being.
How does Nasya Oil work?
In Ayurveda, the nose is considered the doorway to the brain, mind, and consciousness. Using the nasal passageway as a direct route allows the base oils, herbs, and essential oils to assimilate more efficiently than other methods.
When you use Nasya Oil, the herbal oil lubricates the nasal passages, nourishes the tissues of the head and sinuses, and supports the proper flow of prana, your vital life force, through the breath. This Ayurvedic practice helps cleanse, protect, and rejuvenate the sensory organs.
How do you use Nasya Oil? Do you need to warm it first?
Lying down: Tilt your head back slightly. Place 3–5 drops into each nostril, then inhale gently. Keep your head back for a moment, allowing the oil to travel through the nasal passages.
Sitting up: Place a drop of nasya oil on the little finger. Gently insert into the nostril, massaging the inner walls of the nasal passage. Alternate nostrils until each has received three oil applications. Sniff deeply. Rest for a moment to let it penetrate.
Nasya Oil can be used at room temperature, and warming is not required, though some prefer to gently warm it. If you do, do not get water in the bottle.
When should I practice Nasya Oil?
For most, Nasya Oil is beneficial when used regularly as a part of a daily routine, 1–2 times daily. Administering nasya is often practiced in the morning. It can also be used in the afternoon or evening. We recommend finding a time that works best for your routine.
When should I not use Nasya Oil?
It is not recommended to use Nasya Oil during pregnancy or menstruation, while you have a fever or acute illness, or if you have a sinus infection, cold, or the flu, as the nasal passages need to be clear for safe application.
If you have chronic sinus issues or are unsure whether the practice of nasya is appropriate for you, we encourage you to consult an Ayurvedic practitioner who can provide personalized guidance based on your unique constitution and current state of health.
What are the side effects of Nasya Oil?
Nasya oil is generally well-tolerated when used as directed. Some people may experience mild sensations, such as tingling, a slight burn, or watery eyes, when first using Nasya Oil. These sensations typically subside quickly. If the oil reaches the back of your throat, simply spit it out and rinse with warm water.
To minimize any discomfort, beginners can start with just 1–2 drops per nostril and gradually increase to the recommended 3–5 drops. If you experience persistent irritation or have concerns, discontinue use and consult your health practitioner.
How is Nasya Oil different from Super Nasya Oil?
While both provide lubrication to the nasal passages and can be used regularly, there are some differences between the two blends:
- Nasya Oil, Banyan's signature blend, has been created with the intention of supporting the mind, nervous system, respiratory health, and the channel of prana.
- Super Nasya Oil has an especially awakening and refreshing quality, making it ideal for times of cleansing. The scent profile is a little different from Banyan's Nasya Oil, thanks to the the combination of sandalwood and eucalyptus essential oils.
Many keep both on hand to address different needs.
What makes Banyan's Nasya Oil different from other nasya oils?
Banyan's commitment to quality and sourcing means every ingredient is selected with intention. Nasya Oil is certified organic, non-GMO, cruelty free, and free of phthalates and parabens. Created using a combination of traditional Ayurvedic practices and modern quality standards, Nasya Oil is a trusted choice for both experienced practitioners and those new to the practice of nasya.

It feels great
A go to for winter months. Perfect clearer and moisturizer after a Neti pot.
First time trying the Nasya Oil, I am so shocked. I have only tried before bedtime and I sleep so soundly and wake up so refreshed and ready to go. This is the best kept secret and I will keep using.
I bought this product because I was getting bloody noses due to the dry winter air. It helped relieve the dryness in my nose. The smell is very gross in my opinion, but worth the benefit.
Where have these been all my life? 💙 Very calming for Vata heavy people.
i use it daily with my yoga practice. i've been using this product almost 10 years
Not really sure how often im supposed to use. Directions weren’t really clear.
This takes a couple of tries, it's unfamiliar: not like just popping a pill, but I have been using this oil as a preventive, maintenance remedy for the dry seasons for a couple of years and the relief I feel is almost immediate. And now, I'm so happy my boyfriend is using it too, he works from home and doesn't get to go out much, he has a humidifier but something was missing because his sinus were causing a lot of discomfort and stress so I got him to try Banyan's Nasya oil and he loves it. I'm here now ordering a new one because he has taken mine =) I mean, is that love or what!
Thank you for your wonderful review, Cindy! We are so pleased that you and your boyfriend are being comforted by this practice. We love it too!
Long time user. Great stuff!!!
I purchased Nasya Oil for the first time about a month ago. It’s amazing! I noticed a difference almost immediately. The taste is a bit pungent but definitely worth dealing with for a few seconds after using it. Highly recommend this product.
My wife and I love Banyan Nasya oil! We find it nourishing, calming and centering. We love that we can medicate our brains with health supporting formulas like Nasya. It is an essential addition to our ever-improving Ayurvedic regimen.
Thanks for such a great product!

I use it after my Neto pot every night and I have clear nasal passages now. This is a great product!
Thank you for your review, Tracie! We're glad to hear you're enjoying the neti pot and nasya oil, however we want to let you know that it isn't advised to administer nasya immediately following the neti pot. It is wise to wait at least a day after washing with the neti pot, ensuring full drainage of the saline, before administering nasya. Please feel free to contact us if you have more questions!
Very effective for moisturinzing nostrils in dry, desert climate.
I've been using the Nasya Oil due to dryness. It helps tremendously. I watched the video to make sure I did it right. I'm going to order some for my sister as well.
Quality product. For maximum benefit, Use this oil sparingly, just a couple of drops per nostril
Thank you for your review. Please note that Nasya Oil is to be administered directly from its own dropper. A Neti Pot uses saline solution. Standard advice is to use these therapies independent of one another with large gaps of time between.
Love how relaxed I feel and how easy I can breathe after using Nasya oil, especially in the winter months.
Nasya Oil is a great help for sinus issues. It has made it unnecessary for me to use a sinus rinse daily.
I use this oil every day and I bring it with me when I travel. Between winter cold dry weather and summer pollen, as well as dry air on airplanes, this oil mitigates a number of environmental factors for me. Banyan has lovely products.
I've used this nasya oil daily for several years now... helps keep my nose and sinuses clear... and I find I don't have use the neti pot as often.
I love Nasya because my nose feels hydrated and I can breathe well! It smells wonderful 🫶:skin-tone-3:
I’ve been using Nasya Oil for years. Especially during the winter I find it very effective to open up my nasal passages. Year round I find it helps with my mental clarity. It’s like a dose of fresh air without having to go outside!
I purchased a bottle for my month-long stay in New Mexico and it makes such a difference when I wake up the next morning. I've forgotten to use it a couple times and I can tell! The taste of it (because it inevitably falls into the back of my throat) isn't my favorite, but it isn't terrible either. Overall a MUST for anyone transitioning to arid climates or even the rough Wisconsin winters (where I'm from!)
I use this almost daily to counteract allergies from pollution outdoors and indoor allergens from my cat. It combats my dry nasal passages and makes breathing without sneezing easier. Love it.
