Yoga is fantastic for everyone because there are a variety of styles and poses that can be selected, adapted, and modified to complement anyone's mind-body constitution. Learn more about the Ayurvedic perspective on yoga for the doshas here.

Introduction to Dosha-Balancing Yoga


Yoga for Vata

Vata is comprised of the air and ether elements—and is expressed by qualities of mobility and lightness. As a dosha with anxious tendencies, forward bends calm the nervous system, so standing or seated forward bends help to pacify vata dosha. Words carry a message, so for vata types think of words like: grounded, restore, relax, stillness, stability, and trust.

Yoga for Pitta

The elements of fire and water make up this dosha—so pitta flows should have a cooling, fluid quality (envision the feel of cascading waterfalls). Pitta types should practice in a cool or air-conditioned environment. Optimal words for pitta types are: rejuvenate, relax, patience, allow, receive, and calm.

Yoga for Kapha

Kapha consists of earth and water. Kapha sequencing should be dynamic, meaning the poses should not be slow-moving. Holding poses for too long could put a kapha in a stagnant zone. Movement is needed to counterbalance the slow and heavy qualities. Kapha types will benefit from language like: lighten up, energy, forgive, motivate, illuminate, and clarity.
