What is curcumin, and how is it related to turmeric?

Curcumin is a naturally occurring chemical constituent in turmeric. Curcumin, bisdemethoxycurcumin, and demethoxycurcumin are the main curcuminoids, or phenolic compounds, found in turmeric. These constituents give turmeric its golden color and contribute to turmeric's properties for supporting a healthy inflammatory response and overall health and well-being.

Does the color of turmeric indicate the potency or quality?

Turmeric's yellow-orange color, which comes from naturally occurring curcuminoids, is not a reliable indicator of potency, quality, or how much curcumin is present. Color naturally varies based on origin, cultivar, and processing—even the specific temperature while the rhizomes are drying can shift the hue without impacting potency—and even high-quality turmeric can look different batch to batch.

We practice rigorous lab testing on each batch to ensure quality and safety. This includes assessing identity, purity, microbial and contaminants testing, and screening for adulterants.

How much curcumin is in your turmeric?

The amount of curcumin in our turmeric powder is approximately 3 percent. The concentration can vary from season to season depending on environmental conditions such as sunlight, water, and heat.

Do I need to take black pepper with turmeric to help with absorption?

It is not necessary to take black pepper with turmeric. The absorption of turmeric only becomes an issue if you are taking an isolated extract of turmeric like curcumin. Much of the research concerning turmeric's absorbability is specific to extracted curcumin, which on its own has low bioavailability.

Banyan's turmeric is made from the whole turmeric root with all the plant's constituents, including curcumin, in their naturally occurring proportions. In its natural state, turmeric is easily absorbed by the body.

That said, black pepper and turmeric do combine well and are often found together in traditional formulations. Turmeric and black pepper are both ingredients in our Joint Support and Immune Support.
