Karla has a background in sustainable agriculture and community food systems and is passionate about herbal healing and sacred beekeeping. She dreams of starting a community wellness center that serves people who otherwise wouldn’t have access to organic and alternative modalities, where people can come together to heal themselves, each other, and the Earth. She considers herself a polymathic person with many interests who loves to spend her time dancing, singing, writing poetry, drumming, and simply being in nature.
How has Ayurveda changed your life?
Ayurveda is the thing I never knew I always needed in my life! It has opened me up to a whole new understanding and exploration of myself. It has expanded my awareness of the elements around me and within me. Since learning about Ayurveda my life has felt more aligned with my purpose because I now have this ancient system of knowledge to guide me into deeper self-love and self-compassion, which are key ingredients to healing.
Which Banyan products are you currently using and why?
I can’t live without my tongue cleaner! I also use a ton of cooking herbs like cinnamon, cardamom, cumin, turmeric, and coriander every day for flavor and balanced digestion. I use Healthy Skin for cooling my pitta, and I’ve been loving I Sleep Soundly for a full night’s sleep! Joint Balm is also always in my purse.
When are you most likely to go out of balance and how do you bring yourself back in balance using Ayurveda?
I tend to go off balance when I forget to breathe and give thanks. Vata is usually the first to go off balance and reestablishing my daily routine and pranayama meditations help me profoundly! I also turn towards warm, nourishing foods (not too warm so pitta stays happy) to calm my vata and bring me back to center.
Favorite place in the world?
Puerto Rico! My family is originally from the island of enchantment and every time I visit I fall more and more in love with the people, the place, the waters, the mountains, the ecology…and all of its magic!
