How were you introduced to Ayurveda?
I discovered the Ayurvedic Lifestyle after learning to meditate with my teacher, Dr. Deepak Chopra. The lifestyle supports a stable and clear mind that is able to receive the gift of meditation.
How has Ayurveda changed your life?
Ayurveda didn’t change my life, it saved my life. My journey began with a debilitating back injury, chronic pain, and drug and alcohol abuse. Ayurveda, appropriately known as “the mother of all healing” gently cleaned up my life, healed my pain, and allowed me to recover from my deep-seated habits.
Which Banyan products are your currently using and why?
I am a Sesame Oil junkie! I buy it buy the gallon. Every day I give myself a full body massage. At night, I rub my hands and feet to facilitate rest. I take my make-up off with it and soak my hair in it at least once a week. I drop oil in my nose to prevent congestion and in my ears to help with hearing loss.
I take triphala daily without exception. It keeps me regular in the bathroom and I love what it does to my acne prone skin. While I can’t prove the anti-oxidant power is what keeps my 40+ skin looking young, I’m convinced.
I take neem often, it keeps my skin clear and helps my poor liver to digest all the toxins picked up from daily living.
I take shilajit every day. Not only does it keep me connected to the Himalayans, my yogi home, but it is packed full of the mineral supplements that are lacking in our overworked soil and therefore food supply.
I use the Ginger liquid extract pretty much every day. It’s heating without overheating my digestive system. It keeps my master fire high and that means strong immune system and metabolism.
I eat a teaspoon of Chavynprash daily. I love it. The amlaki is great for my aging skin and eyes. It has five of the six tastes and is very satisfying.
I use ghee every single day. Usually I heat almond milk, add a little nutmeg, honey, turmeric, and ghee. It’s my bedtime treat.
When are you most likely to go out of balance and how do you bring yourself back in balance using Ayurveda?
Periods of extreme work. I’m a single mom and an entrepreneur. I have two yoga centers, 24 instructors, and hundreds of clients. It gets crazy. My preventative herbs help me so much. When it gets to be too much, I’ll add ashwagandha to my herbal routine. The life practices of meditation, yoga, and daily routine are critical to my success. When I do get sick, there is an herbal remedy.
I love books. Man’s Search For Meaning by Viktor Frankl is one of my favorites. His beautiful depiction of life during the holocaust and man’s amazing ability to adapt and transcend brings me to tears each time I read it.
