alterative - tending to restore normal health cleanses and purifies the blood; alters existing nutritive and excretory processes gradually restoring normal bodily functions (Triphala)

analgesic - relieves pain. These herbs should not be used for acute pain. However taken over a period of time they can provide relief by addressing the underlying doshic imbalance. For muscle and joint pain (Kaishore Guggulu), for menstrual pain (Tranquil Mind, Women's Support), for abdominal pain due to high vata (Hingvastak), for pain due to overexertion or exercise (Ashwagandha), for headaches due to high pitta (Liver Formula)

anthelmintic - destroys parasitic intestinal worms (Para Cleanse, Neem)

antibacterial - destroys or stops the growth of bacteria (Immune Support, Neem)

antibilious - reduces biliary or jaundice condition (Liver Formula, Amalaki)

antiemetic - preventing or relieving nausea and vomiting. Not for acute conditions (Amalaki, Liver Formula)

antifungal - destroying or inhibiting the growth of fungi (Neem)

anti-inflammatory - counteracts inflammation or its effects. For joints and muscles (Kaishore Guggulu, Ashwagandha) for inflammations in the digestive tract (Shatavari)

antiparasitic - destroys parasites (Para Cleanse, Neem)

antiperiodic - relieves malarial-type fevers and chills; prevents regular recurrences (Mahasudarshan)

antipyretic - reduces fever (Mahasudarshan, Neem)

antispasmodic - prevents or relieves spasm (Ashwagandha, Kaishore Guggulu)

antiviral - opposes the action of a virus. For colds and flus (Immune Support, Mahasudarshan), for skin conditions (Blood Cleanse)

aphrodisiac - heightens senses and stimulates sexual drive. For men (Ashwagandha, Men's Support), for women (Shatavari, Women's Support)

appetizer - stimulates the appetite. For vata (Hingvastak), for pitta (Amalaki), for kapha (Trikatu)

astringent - constricting or binding effect - i.e. checks hemorrhages, secretions (Amalaki, Triphala)

bronchodilator - expands the bronchial tubes by relaxing bronchial muscle (Lung Formula, Trikatu)

calmative - soothes, sedates (Tranquil Mind, Ashwagandha)

cardiotonic - increases the tonicity of the heart (Heart Formula)

carminative - relieves intestinal gas, pain and distention; promotes peristalsis (Haritaki, Hingvastak)

decongestant - reduces congestion or swelling. For colds (Immune Support, Lung Formula), for the G.I. tract (Hingvastak, Trikatu) for the lymph system (Mahasudarshan)

demulcent - soothes, protects and nurtures internal membranes. In general (Shatavari), for the G.I. tract (Amalaki), for the lungs (Lung Formula), for the joints (Kaishore Guggulu), for the kidneys (Kidney Formula)

depurative - cleanses or purifies blood by promoting eliminative functions (Blood Cleanse, Triphala)

diaphoretic - agent that increases perspiration (Mahasudarshan, Trikatu)

digestant - aids in digestion. For vata (Hingvastak), for pitta (Digest Ease), for kapha (Trikatu)

diuretic - promotes activity of kidney and bladder and increases urination (Kidney Formula)

emmenagogue - helps promote and regulate menstruation (Women's Support)

expectorant - promotes discharge of phlegm and mucus from lungs and throat (Lung Formula, Immune Support)

galactogogue - promotes secretion of milk (Shatavari, Ashwagandha)

laxative - loosens and lubricates the bowels. For vata (Haritaki, Hingvastak), for pitta (Amalaki), for kapha (Triphala)

lithotriptic - dissolves or discharges urinary (Kidney Formula) and biliary stones (Liver Formula)

muscle relaxant - loosens or relieves muscular tension (Ashwagandha, Tranquil Mind)

nervine - strengthens functional activity of nervous system; may be stimulant or sedative (Ashwagandha, Tranquil Mind)

nutritive - nourishes the body (Ashwagandha, Shatavari)

opthalmic - healing to disorders and diseases of the eye (Triphala)

purgative - stimulates the production of bowel. For vata (Haritaki, Hingvastak), for pitta (Amalaki), for kapha (Triphala)

refrigerant - reduces body temperature and relieves thirst (Neem)

rejuvenative - restores youthful vigor and appearance (Amalaki, Ashwagandha)

sedative - calms or tranquilizes by lowering functional activity of organ or body part (Ashwagandha, Tranquil Mind)

somniferous - promotes sleep (Ashwagandha, Tranquil Mind)

stimulant - strengthens metabolism (Stress Ease), and circulation (Heart Formula)

stomachic - strengthens stomach function (For vata (Hingvastak), for pitta (Digest Ease), for kapha (Trikatu)

thermogenic - increases body temperature (Ashwagandha, Trikatu)

tonic - stimulates nutrition and increases systemal tone (Stress Ease, Ashwagandha)

vasodilator - relaxes and dilates blood vessels (Heart Formula)

vulnerary - assists in healing of wounds by protecting against infection and by stimulating cell growth (Amalaki, Neem)
